As in all business deals and associations, there are good and bad programs. Keep these tips in mind when searching for programs to join.
First, it should be free. If it's not, run, run away.
Would YOU use the product, or recommend it to your friends and family?
Do you receive sales only on the visitor's first visit from your link, or does the program track that visitor's future activity and credit it to you? Even if the visitor returns to the site on their own?
Is the commission high enough to make it worth your while?
Email the merchant and ask about their security and privacy policies.
How often are commissions paid to you, and in what form? Some programs only pay if you reach a certain amount of sales. This can be good and bad. It's a waste of time and money for them to send you a check for .50 cents. But you should be able to receive a check after, say, $20 worth of sales. Some only pay via Paypal. Be sure to get these points clarified upfront so there's no pain later.
Does the company offer a guarantee? Do they stand behind their product?
Do you have access to track your sales and commissions?
Are you provided with any promotional tools, such as banners or pre-written ads?
Who supports the customer after their purchase?
